Movie Review: The Big Tease

Story: Ever had a bad hair day? Well, the fictitious Platinum Scissors Award competition is to hairdressers 'round the world as the Oscars are to actors in this mockumentary (a la This is Spinal Tap). This campy, uneven comedy follows Scottish hairdresser Crawford MacKenzie (played by Craig Ferguson, who also co-scripted the piece), as he mistakenly thinks he has been invited to Los Angeles to compete, where he would be representing Scotland. The story is about the schmoozing (the word is actually explained in the film in case it shows anywhere but New York), manipulating, string pulling and general ass kissing that ensue which eventually gets him the coveted invitation to compete in this prestigious shearing - (Not Norma Shearer, please). It is certainly not as good as Waiting for Guffman (which I loved) but it has many laughs and while not about the Irish (you know how I am about all things Irish) it is close enough (the Scottish accent is very funny) and hits my slap stick button. If you are in the mood for a comedy - go, eat popcorn, drink Diet Coke, burp and laugh - we did!

Acting: Part of the fun of this movie was trying to recognize all of the B actors in bit parts. I spent a lot of time wondering where I'd seen each actor before. Then I realized most of them are TV refugees from canceled series which are now in rerun land. These people can all be seen nightly on Law and Order reruns either as the perp or the vic. Among the supporting players are Jay Thomas, David Rasche, Mary McCormack, Larry Miller, Frances Fisher, Drew Carey (Craig Ferguson, the star and writer plays his boss on the Drew Carey TV show) and many others.
