Movie Review: The Straight Story Story: Being somewhat obsessive (although some of
my good friends prefer to call it a passion) I couldn't stand that there
was only one nominee's film that I hadn't seen, and so, while I have
not changed my mind as to my pick for best actor I certainly did enjoy
this film. Directed by David Lynch (who can forget
Blue Velvet, The Elephant Man and Twin Peaks, to name a few)?,
who somehow linked up with Disney (?) this film is based on the true
story of senior citizen Alvin Straight's 6 week journey
from somewhere in Iowa to somewhere in Wisconsin via a John Deere riding
lawn mower to visit his estranged brother. It is a slow journey, viewing
it was kind of like being on tranquilizers, but a wonderful trip. We
get a film about connection, family, forgiveness and the sameness of
the human condition.
Acting: Richard Farnsworth is simply wonderful as Alvin
Straight. He is worthy of the nomination. He is sympathetic, warm and
moving (be it rather slowly). Sissy Spacek is also
terrific as his daughter.
Pets: Lots of livestock, dogs on the road and one dead
deer.
Visual Art: None (although the landscape is hypnotic).
Soundtrack: Fitting
Sappy Factor: 2
Quirky Meter: 4
Tissue Usage: 1
Oscar Worthy: Apparently
Length: 110 minutes
LOBO HOWLS: 8
