Movie Review: Space Cowboys Story: I hope you don't think me un-American when
I admit to not being a Clint Eastwood fan. I never understood all of
the hoopla. To me, he was Dirty Harry in every film. Not that
there's anything wrong with that if you have really short term memory
problem. And now, Clint Eastwood, as both director
and star, once again, as Dirty Harry who is still angry and
still righting the wrongs goes into outer space with three
of his lovable, somewhat flawed, crusty, slightly curmudgeonly pals.
It seems they are the only team able to fix a troubled orbiting Russian
communications satellite. Lots of jokes about age, aging, experience
vs. youth, yesterday vs. today and on and on. I felt like I was aging
just watching this film. Don't waste your money. It will be on video
soon and on CBS possibly next season.
Acting: Clint Eastwood as the angry hero, Tommy
Lee Jones as the sacrificial lone daring Texan (remember he
was Al Gore's roommate at Harvard), Donald Sutherland
as the aging lothario and James (hair plugs)
Garner as the flier turned minister were all just fine but
clearly this was no stretch for any of these fellas.
Pets: MaryAnn the adorable chimpanzee who was the first
to go out into deep space. (Don't get me started about animals in experiments.)
Visual Art: None that I can remember. I guess there
isn't much room for art in a space craft.
Soundtrack: Soaring
Theater Audience: Seven men and me. Five of the guys
looked like they were just released from a holding cell somewhere in
the city. I scoured the theater to check for the exits.
Sappy Factor: 9
Oscar Worthy: NOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Length: 105 minutes (seemed longer).
LOBO HOWLS: 4
