| Movie Review: Saving Grace Story: It Takes a Village.....actually, a
quaint Cornish village, filled with dotty, quirky, daft and goofy characters
to fulfill the latest British import a la Waking Ned Divine or The
Full Monty mode. Grace, the beloved widow is supported with gusto
by the townsfolk in her efforts to save her house and property after
her scumbucket husband dies and leaves her in tremendous debt. Her plan?
With the help of her gardener (Craig Ferguson - co-writer
and producer - The Big Tease and The Drew Carey Show) she cultivates
marijuana with the hope of a big score to get her out of debt. The people
of this burg did not seem to need any mood enhancing drugs to become
even looser or goofier. There are no giant guffaws here, just a lot
of chuckles. It is hard not to enjoy these British imports but there
is nothing particularly original about this one and the ending is rushed
and totally implausible. Bur for a summer flick, it is fun.
Acting: The always wonderful Brenda Blethyn
(Secrets and Lies) steals the film. Everyone else
is pretty much type cast and properly daft.
Pets: None. Definitely could have used some.
Visual Art: Small English countryside prints.
Soundtrack: Fun
Theater Audience: A small group, most looked like they
could have been extras in this film.
Sappy Factor: 2
Quirky Meter: 2
Oscar Worthy: NO
Nit Picking Quotient: Too formulaic.
Length: 95 minutes. Way under the Lobo 2 hour rule.
LOBO HOWLS: 5
