Story: Just when you think they can't make another World War II film about the shattered lives involved in the Holocaust, they do - and this one is done well. It focus' on a little known aspect of German life - the intermarriage between German Jews and Aryans and what happened to many of them.

The Germans had separate laws regarding these couples. This film is based on a true story about a group of Aryan wives whose husbands had been rounded up in Berlin prior to deportation. Their civil disobedience stance for a week on a street in Berlin is worth your time.

Their bravery, courage and perseverance makes me question how brave I might be when faced with a similar circumstance. Would I be ready to protest? Risk my life? Face the unknown? I would like to think I would.

Director Margarethe Von Trotta (Rosa Luxemburg) deftly handles the film's interweaving of past and present. The film is appropriately slow paced and character driven.

Acting: Beautifully acted by one and all. I cared deeply for all of the characters. Katja Riemann, who plays Aryan Lena Fischer won Best Actress Award at last year's Venice Film festival for her role.

Predilection: It us hard for me to pass up a film about the Holocaust.

Critters: None.

Soundtrack: Appropriately detailed.

Theater Audience: About twenty empathetic people some who looked like they might have been 'survivors.'

Sappy Factor: This could easily have been manipulative and cloying but it stayed the course and was not sappy at all.

Quirky Meter: 0

Squirm Scale: The whole subject makes me squirm.

Predictability Level: Moderate.

Tissue Usage: Oh my, yes. Not a dry eye in the house.

Oscar Worthy: Not sure.

Nit Picking: It needed to be edited by about twenty minutes and the film would have been tidier.

Big Screen or Rental: Rental would be fine. If you want to see more films about this emotional subject there are many to chose from, including: Schindler's List, Life is Beautiful and The Diary of Anne Frank.

Length: Two hours and 15 minutes.
